Saints discuss quarterback competition

The New Orleans Saints have a quarterback controversy that they weren’t expecting after the sudden retirement of Derek Carr, spurred on by an unfortunate injury suffered last year that had lingering effects that would’ve thrown this season into jeopardy for him.

It’s been nearly two weeks since Carr announced his retirement, and now the Saints are monitoring Spencer Rattler, Jake Haener, Tyler Shough, and Hunter Dekkers to see who will take the reins next season.

Head coach Kellen Moore was asked if the franchise would bring in a veteran quarterback, and responded that the team will “give these guys a bunch of opportunities.”

“Certainly there’s times where if the opportunity presents itself, you feel like it’s a really good fit, you’d love to do it,” Moore said, according to Pro Football Talk. “We feel like we have some good guys here that can certainly mentor each other at the same time going through this process.”

“We’ll see how this whole thing progresses. The roster is a moving, dynamic thing throughout the offseason process.”

Ratler also spoke about his mindset through the competition.

“You can’t put too much pressure on yourself,” Rattler said. “It’s Year Two. Great opportunity ahead of me. I’ve just got to keep working, keep my head down and give it what I’ve got.”

It’ll be interesting to see how the Saints handle the surprising situation they’ve found themselves in.
