Revisiting the 2021 Cleveland Browns Draft Class

My past draft re-visit series continues as we look at Andrew Berry's second draft as the general manager of the Cleveland Browns in 2021. Part one of this series looked at his first draft in 2020, when the Browns had seven picks, with Berry hitting on three. However, two of those hits were just day three guys who were solid contributors. The team had four top-100 picks and only hit on one; that was a rough start.

You can read that review here for more analysis. Before we dive into the 2021 draft, I wanted to remind readers they can check out Sam Penix and I break down the film of this year's class on YouTube each Monday at 7:00pm. The first two episodes are live and linked below.

Round 1, Pick 26: Greg Newsome II, CB, Northwestern

Since being drafted by the Browns, Greg Newsome II has had some ups and downs, but overall, he's been a pretty good player. They tasked him with making a move inside to be a slot corner after his rookie year, and though it took some time for him to get his feet under him, he was able to settle in and be a solid player.

I still believe he is at his best when playing on the outside, but he's a great athlete and can cover the shifty, explosive slot wide receivers when he's lined up inside. He is up and down as a run defender, but his coverage ability is excellent overall. Newsome has had bad days, but he's had more good days than bad.

He had a down year in 2024, but his ability to go inside and outside based on what the team needs, especially if an injury to someone like Denzel Ward, can't be overstated. He's had injuries, but this was a good pick, especially if he can bounce back in 2025.
