It's been a very good season personally for Victor Osimhen as the striker continues to impress at Galatasaray.
After Chelsea failed to agree terms with the 26-year-old last summer for a loan move from Napoli, the Nigerian ended up moving to Galatasaray as his position with the Italian side was deemed untenable. With two games of the Super Lig season remaining, Galatasaray were crowned champions at the weekend and have also already won the Turkish Cup.
Osimhen has been on fire for much of the campaign and has scored 36 goals in 40 games in all competitions. He also has eight assists in that period.
football.london understands Chelsea remain interested in Osimhen ahead of the summer transfer window, although the club are also monitoring a handful of other strikers. Benjamin Sesko and Liam Delap are just two players who the club have scouted in recent months.
With the early transfer window opening on June 1 due to the revamped Club World Cup, it's possible Chelsea look to do a deal as early as next month for someone like Osimhen. They may have to wait until the end of the Super Lig season, however, as Galatasaray still have two games remaining.
The Turkish champions will make the trip to Goztepe on Saturday, May 24 before welcoming Istanbul Basaksehir to Rams Park on Sunday, June 1. Osimhen may well also be involved in Nigeria's international friendlies against Ghana on Wednesday, May 28 and Russia on Friday, June 6.
So, in all likelihood, Osimhen most probably would not make the move to Stamford Bridge before June 7, although any deal is likely to be extremely complicated anyway due to the financial numbers involved.
The striker was asked about his future after Galatasaray clinched the Turkish league title on Sunday. “I feel very happy. It is incredible to take part in Galatasaray’s history and reach the fifth star,” he said.
“We have two matches left. We will look to have fun. I am enjoying the moment. I am not thinking about my future.”
Enzo Maresca admitted last year, after Chelsea failed to bring in a striker in the summer, that the club only want to sign players when it suits the Blues' terms. "We want players, but we wanted a player that we decide," the Italian said.
"It has to be on our conditions. If a player is not here, then it was not. We will see in January."
Nicolas Jackson, at the age of 23, is still very raw but has undoubted potential. Maresca has faith in the Senegalese although it's widely considered another striker still needs to be signed this summer, to help take the pressure off Jackson.
"I had faith, and the club also, even before [in Jackson]," Maresca added. "We trust Nicolas. When the transfer window was open, I said he was doing fantastic with us.
"The only thing I know is he’s signing a new contract – I don’t know how many years. I’m very happy. Nicolas is doing a fantastic job with us. He scored again. He had more chances but we’re happy with him."
