The Jacksonville Jaguars could benefit from all the competition they can get, both internal and external. In-house, they'll hold several position tackles, including the one at left tackle. Outside, they'll get to practice with an intradivisional foe.
Head coach Liam Coen met with the press corps after Day 1 of Jaguars Organized Team Activities and said that Jacksonville will hold joint practices with the Miami Dolphins, "One as of right now, one as of right now... Yeah, Miami."
Last year, the Jaguars had joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This is noteworthy because Coen was their offensive coordinator at the time, and after the 2024 season, he became the Jacksonville head coach.
Keep in mind that the Jags are no strangers to joint practices. Back in 2023, they also spent a few days with the Detroit Lions. The year prior, it was with the Atlanta Falcons.
Earlier in the exchange on Day 1 of OTAs, Liam Coen talked about the preparation the team is undergoing and why he had players running from drill to drill.
"Yeah, we're not out here all that long at the end of the day," Coen told the local media when asked about his philosophy. "And so, the whole thought process is just, hey, keep moving. You know, from a conditioning standpoint, if we're going from drill to drill and we're buzzing around and we're not walking on the field, well, we don't have to sit here and do extra conditioning after they have to go with the weight room staff and go do extra conditioning.
Coen continued, "That is a philosophy thing for us as a team, and just keeping guys moving, keeping it going. Ultimately, we do need some breaks. We need to let them kind of cool off and give, give their thoughts a minute. But, uh, thought they handled it for the most part well today."
Below is Coen's full exchange with the media. Trevor Lawrence and offensive coordinator Grant Udinski also spoke.
Liam Coen is adding his wrinkles to Jaguars practice but also doing what's worked
It's refreshing to see that Liam Coen is operating with a sense of urgency and already has players working on their condition at this stage of the offseason. On the other hand, he knows that the team needs to get to the regular season in one piece, so he's trying to keep a balanced approach by giving players breaks. As he noted, there's only so much time in practice, so they must make the most out of it.
On the other hand, it's good to know that the Jaguars will continue to hold joint practices under Coen. As beneficial as in-house competition is, nothing beats getting the chance to test your skills against an opponent in scrimmage conditions. The fact that it will be against the Miami Dolphins during the heat of the summer is even better, as it will further help Jacksonville improve its conditioning.
The bottom line is that there's a long way to go to the regular season, but Liam Coen is doing all the right things to ensure the Jacksonville Jaguars are in a position to improve in 2025.
