Earlier this offseason, there was a report of a rumor (probably the best way to say it) that the Cleveland Browns were talking about a trade for QB Dak Prescott. That “rumor” was quickly debunked and, obviously, didn’t happen, but we share with you how important it is to look at contracts when you hear rumors to help know if they make sense.
If the contract doesn’t fit, you must not believe the rumor.
When it comes to the Browns crowded quarterback room, assets used to acquire players matter (listed below in order of cost):
That doesn’t mean those costs of acquisition are the only deciding factors. If it did, Flacco would be the first QB out the door no matter what. Performance, fit, the team’s goal, contract and age often join the cost of acquisition in deciding between two players.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes that either Flacco or Pickett will be the starter or the odd man out in Cleveland, with the two rookies being kept:
Based on his statements, it does not sound like Schefter has any inside sources but is reading the tea leaves of the Browns roster. The long-time ESPN Insider notes that Cleveland could help another team’s need, like we mentioned with the New Orleans Saints, by trading away whichever veteran doesn’t win the job in training camp.
Do you think that makes the most sense for the Browns this season: 1 vet, 2 rookies? Should only performance matter when deciding on backups or should upside and age also play a role?
