Bashir Humphreys played an important role in Burnley’s incredible defense and 100-point campaign in the Championship, helping the Clarets earn an immediate return to the Premier League, alongside Leeds United.
Humphreys was technically only on loan from Chelsea this season, though his loan did (most likely) include an obligation by Burnley to make the move permanent and (possibly even) without needing to meet any sort of condition (like, say, promotion). Either way, they have now indeed confirmed that the 22-year-old will join permanent this summer, once the transfer window opens.
Burnley and Leeds both finished with 100 points this season, with the latter finishing top on goal difference. However, they managed to do so in drastically different ways, with Leeds scoring 95 goals and Burnley conceding just 16. Sixteen! That’s an even better record than Chelsea’s 15 in the 2004-05 Premier League! (The Championship season consists of 46 games, eight more than the 38-game Premier League season.) In fact, Scott Parker’s men have set record for the stingiest defense in English football history, conceding just a touch over one goal every three games. They kept 30(!) clean sheets, falling just one short of breaking that record, too.
Humphreys leaves Chelsea with two senior appearances, having also spent time on loan at SC Paderborn and Swansea City. Burnley are reportedly paying around £15m for this transfer, with a sell-on clause included as well.
