Bills Pushed By ESPN To Replace Damar Hamlin

The Buffalo Bills have spent plenty of money this offseason at the safety position. Veterans like Damar Hamlin were brought back, while free agents like Darrick Forrest were signed to bolster the group.

Buffalo may not be done with the position, though.

ESPN analyst Matt Bowen highlighted the Bills' perceived weakness along the depth of the safety position and suggested that free agent safety Julian Blackmon could provide an upgrade.

"Blackmon's skill set fits with the foundational split-field coverages in Buffalo's defensive system," Bowen said. "Plus, I see him as an upgrade over Damar Hamlin in the post. Blackmon has the ability to move off his deep landmarks and make plays on the ball. He had three interceptions with the Colts last season, and four in 2023.

"He also recorded 85-plus tackles in each of the past two seasons. This pickup is all about adding more range and playmaking upside to the third level of Buffalo's defense."

It's almost stunning how Blackmon, a 26-year-old safety, still remains a free agent at this point. He has picked off 10 passes over his career, and seven in the last two years combined.

Blackmon remains a strong cover safety, and someone who can help any defense. While there's not a lot of money to go around for Buffalo, they are a team that should be interested in bolstering the position group.

There is an emotional component here with the inspirational Hamlin involved. That cannot be ignored. But an upgrade?

It could very well be the difference between the team merely competing for a playoff win or a Super Bowl berth.
