Brock Purdy admitted facing a sleepy dilemma right before 49ers drafted him

The 49ers apparently exhausted Brock Purdy back during the 2022 NFL Draft, and they also weren't his preferred destination either.

Ends can certainly justify the means, and few NFL players know that more than San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

In the wake of the biggest contract ever dished out by the Niners, the $265 million quarterback can look back at the arduous path he took from scant collegiate recruitment to being the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft and laugh.

And he can laugh about how he went from a comparative unknown entering his rookie season, a player who'd likely see some preseason action before being relegated to the practice squad, to becoming one of the highest-profile players in the league.

That said, it might have been an exhausting journey.

Literally.

Brock Purdy admits he took a nap just before 49ers drafted him

Speaking with The Athletic's Mike Silver, Purdy shared some provocative details about the days and hours leading up to becoming "Mr. Irrelevant," the final pick of the draft.

Knowing he wouldn't be a first-, second- or even a third-round pick, Purdy anticipated going on day three of the draft, and he apparently received a call from San Francisco saying it would target him with one of its late-round picks.

"That last day was just so tiring, so draining," Purdy told Silver. "Throughout the day, I was following the Niners, and anytime they didn’t pick me, I would be, like, drained in a sense. So, I remember my dad and I literally took a nap at some point in the sixth round. I was so tired from all of it."

The quarterback also shared how he woke up in Round 7 and received another call from the 49ers, who said they were possibly going to pick him with their final pick.

When Purdy learned the Niners' final selection was also the final pick of the draft, he declared, "You’ve gotta be kidding me."

Purdy also shared he hoped another team would draft him prior to San Francisco, although he didn't give any specifics to Silver as to which one or why. In the mad dash to the final selection, Purdy's agent was also fielding calls from other teams about a quick undrafted free-agent signing, and Purdy was trying quickly to evaluate his best options.

Of course, the 49ers put an end to that need by using the 262nd overall pick on him, causing all kinds of jubilation within the Purdy household.

"We celebrated like I was the first pick," Purdy added.

Good thing he got that nap in before the celebration.
