What Chelsea need to do to qualify for Champions League after Man City victory

After the penultimate round of Premier League fixtures on Tuesday night, Chelsea know they will secure a return to the Champions League if they better Aston Villa's result on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues head into the final game of the season at Nottingham Forest in the fifth and final Champions League qualification place, with Villa level on points in sixth.

However, Enzo Maresca's side have a superior goal difference to the Midlanders, which could be vital at the close of play on Sunday afternoon.

Chelsea, who have not featured in the Champions League since the 2022/23 season, could even clinch fourth place if they win and Newcastle United fail to beat Everton at St James' Park.

Villa, meanwhile, quarter-finalists in this season's Champions League, would need Chelsea or Newcastle United to draw or lose if they are to qualify for Europe's elite competition once again.

After Sunday's Premier League clash at Forest, Chelsea will travel to Poland to face La Liga outfit Real Betis in the Conference League final.

When previewing the game on Tuesday, Maresca admitted he was not happy that the Spaniards would have two extra days to prepare for the final after LaLiga accepted Betis' request to bring forward this weekend's clash against Valencia by 48 hours to Friday.

"I'm not happy, 100%, you cannot allow another team 48 hours more when you play a European final," said Maresca. "[Either we play Friday] or they play Sunday like us.

"I don't know if it is from LaLiga, the Premier League or UEFA, but if you ask people in this room if it is normal to play a final where another team has 48 hours more to prepare, it is not normal."
