Chelsea’s race for the Champions League spots will head to the final day

While the Premier League title and relegation wrapped up weeks ago - there is still plenty to play for heading into the final day of the Premier League season.

From Manchester City in third to Nottingham Forest in seventh - there are just three points splitting five teams with three Champions League places up for grabs on Sunday. Chelsea sit fifth in the final qualification spot - level with Newcastle United in fourth and Aston Villa in sixth. Forest are just a point further behind in seventh.

Enzo Maresca takes his side to the City Ground on Sunday in a massive clash. Two of City, Newcastle, Chelsea, Villa and Forest will miss out on the Champions League. Pep Guardiola’s side won 3-1 against Bournemouth on Tuesday night to move themselves into third spot.

The key fixtures this weekend, along with Chelsea’s trip to Forest, are City v Fulham, Manchester United v Aston Villa and Newcastle v Everton.

Enzo Maresca insists focus is on Nottingham Forest

He said: “I’m not happy, 100 per cent. You cannot allow a team 48 hours more than the other team when you play the final of a European competition. I don’t know if it’s from La Liga, the Premier League or UEFA. If I ask you if it is normal to play a final where a team has 48 hours more than the other team, it is not normal. I think it’s not something correct. Now, if it’s UEFA, La Liga or the Premier League, I don’t know to be honest.”

Opta predict final results and Premier League table

Chelsea gave their hopes of a top-five spot a huge boost with a 1-0 win over the Red Devils on Sunday. According to Opta, Chelsea have a 43.3 per cent chance of winning against Forest, compared to 31.2 per cent for the home side. City have been given a 56.1 per cent probability of claiming all three points at Fulham while Villa have been given a 51.2 per cent likelihood of winning at Old Trafford.

Newcastle have been given the strongest chance of securing victory this weekend, with Opta forecasting a Magpies victory over Everton as 66.9 per cent likely. If the results pan out the way Opta have predicted, it would see the final table look like this for the five teams fighting for the remaining Champions League spots.

3. Man City - 71 points

4. Newcastle United - 69 points

5. Chelsea - 69 points

6. Aston Villa - 69 points

7. Nottingham Forest - 65 points
