Arsenal and Chelsea 'battle' for Gittens as Dortmund chief sparks transfer push

Chelsea and Arsenal are reportedly in a battle to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jamie Gittens. The 20-year-old enjoyed another strong season in Germany, where he contributed 12 goals and three assists across all competitions.

In a report from Caught Offside, the two London clubs have been named as potential suitors as well as Newcastle United. It has been suggested that the three Premier League clubs are seriously interested in the Englishman.

It has previously been suggested that Arsenal were ahead of their rivals in the hunt to sign Gittens, who could cost in the region of €55million (around £46m) - a significantly lesser sum than the £80million that was quoted in the Mirror in February.

Gittens is reportedly happy in Dortmund but would be open to taking up a new challenge this summer and the opportunity to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world is reportedly seen as an exciting prospect.

But the two Premier League clubs could be on red alert following the surprise claim for Dortmund chief Sebastian Kehl.

The former midfielder admitted that they may have to reduce their budget. He told SPORT1: "We want to reduce wages.

"That said, it’s possible we’ll continue with some of these players. But some may no longer be part of the BVB squad next season. There’s definitely a market for [Gittens]. He’s a very exciting player. We’ll be having discussions soon. If offers come in, we’ll have to deal with them."

Gittens previously had an £84million (€100m) price tag slapped on his head, but it has been suggested that they could accept a half-reduction on that figure.

Both the Gunners and the Blues have been linked with forwards and wide players in order to strengthen their options in pursuit of success domestically and in Europe.

Nico Williams has also been mooted, while Gittens is said to be on the radar of both clubs.

But a pursuit will depend on the asking price, it has been reported.
