Why Barca have made Diaz a top summer transfer target

Barcelona have reportedly made Liverpool forward Luis Diaz their top transfer target in a move which doesn’t appear to make too much sense.

The 28-year-old would be a very expensive addition and doesn’t look a guaranteed starter with the likes of Raphinha and Lamine Yamal around.

So why are Barcelona so keen? Diario Sport have come up with some reasons why Diaz is so liked at Barcelona and has become the club’s preferred choice over Nico Williams.

Firstly, it’s reported Barcelona value his maturity which they feel is important as they have a squad packed full of young talent such as Yamal, Pau Cubarsi and Marc Casado.

The Catalans also think he can make an instant impact - after enjoying a Premier League-winning season at Liverpool - and make a difference immediately at Barca. The feeling is he can “bring wisdom and experience” which is needed at crucial times in games.

Barcelona plan to continue relying on youth going forward but think Diaz can “bring something different” and also become a key leader in the dressing room.

Mundo Deportivo are also looking at the potential transfer and say Barca discussed how to improve the squad internally and decided a winger must be the priority.

The feeling is Barca need to strengthen with a “top-level wide forward who can compete for a starting spot” - pointing out that Deco has recently admitted Barca “feel very dependent” on Yamal and Raphinha.

Diaz’s pressing is also valued as well as his ability to play as a No. 9. The fact he has only two years left on his contact let’s Barca think he could be prised away from the Reds.

It remains to be seen what happens but Liverpool are thought to want around €80 million for Diaz which still makes a transfer look highly unlikely as things stand.
