Barryn Sorrell’s appearance on the NFL Draft stage last month was an instant classic moment. You couldn’t have scripted it better. A hard-working, high-character player pays his own way to show up for the NFL Draft, only to be selected by the host team? It would have seemed corny if it hadn’t played out before our eyes. In retrospect, it’s almost surprising we didn’t hear the swelling of an orchestral soundtrack as Sorrell’s big moment played out.
But beyond how cool it was, Sorrell’s story is a great reminder of the human interest aspect of every draft pick. Every selection is the culmination of someone’s life’s work. Whether they go lower or higher than they expected, being picked by an NFL team is something each player has worked toward for years, and getting to see that play out is always enjoyable.
That might be the best part of Sorrell’s story, in fact. It’s not just that his moment wasn’t great on its own, it’s that it was a microcosm of hundreds of others. Every player picked in the draft has put in years and years of blood, sweat, and tears to reach this point, perfecting their skills to become one of the elites of their profession. Even if they don’t last long in the NFL, there are far more players who never even get a taste of what they’re about to experience. They’ve made it, and the sky is the limit going forward.
