New report is bad news for NFL fans who don’t like Roger Goodell

It doesn’t look like NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is leaving anytime soon.

The Athletic reports that NFL owners are expected to vote on a contract extension for the longtime commissioner. Don’t expect much drama. According to The Athletic, all 32 owners are expected to vote yes on a new contract for Goodell.

The 66-year-old Goodell has been the commissioner of the NFL since 2006. Since then, his contract has been renewed four times, most recently in 2023. The impending extension comes with plenty of time left on Goodell’s current deal, which reportedly runs into 2027.

Goodell, who succeeded Paul Tagliabue in 2006, has the second-longest tenure of any commissioner in the history of the NFL. That record belongs to Pete Rozelle, who was at the helm from 1960-1989.

During that time, Goodell has overseen tremendous financial gains for the league as well as plenty of controversies that have drawn the ire of fans.

Goodell remains a villain in New England for his role in driving Deflategate to the controversy it eventually became.

But as much as Patriots fans may hate Goodell, it looks like they’ll be stuck with him for the foreseeable future.
