Massive Hawaiian lineman explains why he signed with Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ new offensive lineman, Gareth Warren, was signed by the team out of rookie minicamp after a tryout.

The Lindenwood product found his way to Pittsburgh after his agent called to say they were interested and wanted to sign him. Warren, in an interview on ‘Steelers Afternoon Drive’ explains how that all came about.

“My agent called me up after the draft, and usually, you get signed in that time, but he told me some teams were interested in me, and so, I got the invite from the Steelers,” Warren said. “And I wanted to take it and do my best. I went into the week and was like, ‘Just play your game, learn fast, and it’s going to mentally and physically exhaust, but this what you worked for and dreamed for.’

Warren says the Steelers already told him he needs to be ready to play both sides. He has played tackle and guard in the past, making him a potential option to play up to four spots along the offensive line.

He says the Steelers told him they see a lot of potential in him as a player and wanted to see what he could do in an extended look.

“They told me they see a lot of potential in me,” Warren said. “They wanted me to continue to develop into my game and pick off of the veterans. I think it’s great to be a player in this organization. I was very blessed to hear that and very thankful, so I took it.”

Warren is 328 pounds while running a 5.22 40-yard dash with a 1.81 10-yard split. Warren has 33 5/8-inch arms, giving him enough length to stay at offensive tackle if that is what the Steelers view him as heading into the offseason.

However, the Steelers have needs on the interior, and Warren’s versatility is the path to making the roster.
