Dru Phillips had an impressive rookie season, earning the starting nickel cornerback role early in the year and becoming the most underrated Giants player, according to PFF.
He could be primed for an even better sophomore year thanks to a recent procedure.
Phillips, the Giants’ third round pick in the 2024 draft (70th overall), revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that he recently underwent LASIK surgery to correct a vision problem that warranted eyeglasses/contact lens usage.
“LASIK was one of the best decisions I’ve made,” Phillips wroteMonday. “The process was smooth, recovery was quick, and I’m now seeing 20/20. Couldn’t recommend them more!”
LASIK can help correct a number of conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Phillips’ teammate, quarterback Jameis Winston, underwent the procedure in 2020.
The 23-year-old corner’s condition certainly didn’t hold him back his rookie year, during which he allowed just one touchdown from the slot and logged one interception. He was a key member of general manager Joe Schoen’s strong 2024 class, which featured wide receiver Malik Nabers, safety Tyler Nubin, tight end Theo Johnson, running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. and linebacker Darius Muasau.
Let’s see if his new eyesight leads to an even stronger second year. He’s expected to start at nickel corner again, with Paulson Adebo and Deonte Banks starting on the outside.
