Rodrygo to Arsenal links grow + injured Saliba ruled out

Evening all.

So the links between Rodrygo and Arsenal continue to grow, with Sky Germany reporting it’s a case of ‘deal on’ with Arsenal claimed to be exploring all possible options when it comes to the Brazilian winger.

The fact that this comes so soon after the Madrid based press slapped Nico Williams all over the front of their sports papers is interesting timing.

Williams is a player we know Mikel Arteta likes. He tried to get him last summer but it didn’t prove possible, with Williams opting to stay put in Bilbao.

But should he end up going to Madrid this summer, that would surely lead to a Rodrygo exit. Perhaps this is the direction that Arsenal believe things are heading towards and that has led to them exploring the option of Rodrygo a little bit more closely.

Personally, I think you have to at least be in the conversation if it emerges that a player like Rodrygo might be on the market, especially at a time when you are looking to strengthen in the wide attacking areas.

That’s not me saying Arsenal should go out and do everything they can to get him. It would no doubt be a hugely expensive deal to do and there are other exciting options out there, but conversations about the possibility absolutely need to be had.

I really do like Rodrygo. I know things haven’t gone great for him recently, but I think he has a real personality about him. He’s done it in some big games in some big moments and it does feel like the right time for him to get away from Madrid and try something new.

Talks have begun behind the scenes. The 24-year-old is a potential departure candidate at Real Madrid.

So we’ll see how things progress over the next few weeks, but I do think this is an interesting one.

Elsewhere William Saliba has been ruled out of Sunday’s season finale at Southampton due to a hamstring injury, while Jurrien Timber underwent ankle surgery on Tuesday.

I’m told that Timber just had a minor procedure and that the hope is he will be back in time to take a full part in pre-season, but I’m sure we’ll find out more during Mikel Arteta’s press conference tomorrow morning.

Right, that’s it for today. Just a note that this week’s Arsenal Press Pass show has just gone live for all my Inside Arsenal Patreon members.

As always, I’m joined by Sam Dean of the Telegraph and Simon Collings of the Standard and there’s plenty discussed, including Rodrygo, Nico Williams, Jurrien Timber and plenty more.
