One of the hottest topics of the NFL offseason has been the tush push, the special variation of the quarterback sneak that the Philadelphia Eagles have perfected behind quarterback Jalen Hurts. The Green Bay Packers made a proposal to ban the play, and after the voting was tabled once at the Annual League Meeting back in March, it was voted on again on Wednesday and did not pass.

The tush push will live on, as the final vote tally was 22-10 against the proposal, which ironically was the same score that the Eagles beat the Packers by in the playoffs last season en route to winning the Super Bowl. Green Bay had recently tweaked the rule change as well to penalize any play that involves a push, not just the infamous tush push.
Turns out the NFL owners didn’t like that.
For the Denver Broncos, this vote doesn’t benefit them, as they are not a team who utilizes the advanced sneak to essentially guarantee a first down every time it’s third or fourth and one. It also hurts them as they have to travel to Philadelphia — on a short week coming off a Monday Night Football matchup with Cincinnati — in Week 5 this season in a tough section of the schedule.
That matchup is arguably the most difficult one on Denver’s schedule, and will be a real gut check for Denver to see how much of a contender they are coming off the Cincinnati game.
Another proposal that was tabled at the original meeting was the re-seeding of the playoff bracket, which was brought to the table by the Detroit Lions after they narrowly avoided being a 14-3 Wild Card team. The team withdrew their proposal Wednesday morning, just hours before it was slated to be voted upon.
This wouldn’t have affected the Broncos this past season, as they would’ve been the No. 7 seed in the AFC playoff picture with or without the new proposal. Maybe in different years when the AFC South Champion has only won nine games, but not this year.
The rule would’ve drastically shaken up the NFC playoff picture, as all three Wild Card teams had a better record than the No. 3 and No. 4 seeded division champions.
Detroit re-shaped the rule to make it so only the second round of the playoffs would be reseeded, as the NFL owners emphasized the importance of how much divisions matter in the NFL. Still, this wouldn’t have affected Denver since the Broncos obviously didn’t make it to the second round after giving up 31 straight points to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card.
Broncos fans will get to see the preserved tush push in action on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 11:00 a.m. Denver time. The game against Philadelphia will be broadcast on CBS.
