Why Constant Change Has Made Jalen Hurts Even More Dangerous

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is entering the 2025 season with yet another change at offensive coordinator, as Kevin Patullo steps in to replace Kellen Moore following Moore's departure to become the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. This marks the sixth play-caller for Hurts in his six NFL seasons, continuing a pattern that has followed him throughout his career.

The consistency of change has been remarkably consistent for Hurts, who has now had 12 different play-callers in his 10 seasons at the college and professional level. From Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian at Alabama to Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma, and now a revolving door of coordinators with the Eagles, Hurts has rarely experienced offensive continuity.

Despite this constant flux, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni has praised Hurts' approach to these transitions in the past. "The same way he's handled it every year," Sirianni said. "I think he's a guy that just is going to — again, same thing, start right from the beginning again, working out like crazy again, getting ready again in the classroom, getting ready on the field."

Rather than viewing these transitions as setbacks, Hurts has embraced them as opportunities for growth.

"You're always in a place where you're trying to improve and find that 1 percent," Hurts said. "I think it's unique to experience all the coaches I have — the offensive coordinators, the offensive leadership in the quarterback room — all those things have been positives for me because I've turned it into a positive. I'm able to lean on so many different things and decide when do I need it when it comes to going out there and performing and leading."

This philosophical approach to change has allowed Hurts to develop a diverse offensive toolkit, drawing from multiple systems and coaching philosophies to create his own comprehensive understanding of quarterback play.

Perhaps most impressive is how Hurts has maintained excellence despite the coaching carousel. Throughout his college and NFL career, he has compiled an extraordinary 89-20 record as a full-time starter. His achievements include four title game appearances, a top-two finish in both MVP and Heisman Trophy voting, and now a Super Bowl championship with Super Bowl MVP honors.

With the Eagles specifically, Hurts has led the team to the playoffs every season as the starting quarterback, accumulating a 46-20 record. His .697 win percentage ranks fifth-best among starting quarterbacks since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger.

The one season where Hurts did have a repeat play-caller (2022 with Shane Steichen) resulted in his runner-up finish for NFL MVP, demonstrating how powerful continuity can be for a quarterback's development. In that season, Hurts completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 4,280 yards with 25 touchdowns to just six interceptions, posting a 100.8 passer rating across 18 starts. He added 903 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns, becoming the first player in NFL history to record both a 100+ passer rating and 10+ rushing touchdowns in a single season.

Hurts elevated his game further in the 2024 postseason with Kellen Moore, completing 71.4 percent of his passes for 726 yards with five touchdowns to just one interception for a 108.6 passer rating. His Super Bowl LIX MVP performance saw him complete 77.3 percent of his passes for 221 yards with two touchdowns while rushing for 72 yards and a score.

His clutch play was particularly notable in the second half of the season following the Eagles' bye week, where he completed 85 of 117 passes (72.6 percent) for 1,208 yards with seven touchdowns and zero interceptions, leading the league with a 125.6 passer rating. Adding 269 yards rushing and 10 rushing touchdowns during that stretch, Hurts posted 17 total touchdowns without a single giveaway in second halves.

The transition to Patullo may be smoother than previous changes, as he has been with the Eagles since Sirianni took over in 2021, serving as assistant head coach and passing game coordinator. This institutional knowledge should help provide some continuity within the offensive system.
