Pro Football Focus didn't include Brock Purdy on the list of the 49ers' best three players, but the timing of the list's release is notable.
Timing is everything, right? And maybe Pro Football Focus isn't good at it.
Or they are, depending on how you look at things.
PFF's Trevor Sikkema recently released a list of all 32 teams' three best players, including the San Francisco 49ers, and the analyst opted not to include quarterback Brock Purdy in the Niners' trio of current bests.
OK, fine. That might not be the biggest deal ever, especially when one looks at the three players Sikkema included: tight end George Kittle, defensive end Nick Bosa and linebacker Fred Warner. Those three certainly have more accolades to their respective résumés than Purdy at this point.
But, in case you had been living under a rock, Purdy is kind of in the news now after inking a massive five-year, $265 million extension, the biggest contract ever given out by San Francisco in its franchise history.
Purdy is now one of the league's eight highest-paid players, so it's a legitimate question why he's making so much money when he's not even viewed by PFF as one of the 49ers' three best.
However, that's not what we're looking at here.
PFF had awfully poor timing with Brock Purdy snub from 49ers' top-3 list
If you comb through Sikkema's article, you'll notice it was published on May 20, the exact same day the Niners officially announced Purdy's extension.
Now, none of this is to say the PFF analyst was deliberately trying to rub San Francisco's nose in the critique. As far as anyone knows, Sikkema had been working on the top-three list for every team for quite some time, opting to publish it at the most opportune moment (hey, we're in this business, too).
However, it's certainly ironic to notice the timing. Sikkema's declaration of Purdy not being one of the 49ers' three best players coinciding with the team's official extension announcement is, well... provocative.
Bad timing. Or good, depending how one views it.
