Eagles owner Jeff Lurie gave it all he had during an “impassioned speech” on Wednesday to help keep the tush push alive.
NFL owners voted whether to ban the play Philadelphia has found a lot of success with, and Lurie made a speech that, according to ESPN’s Seth Wickersham, lasted close to an hour that included quite the colorful analogy.
“Lurie made an analogy, telling the room that regardless of whether the play was banned, it was a “win-win” for the Eagles, adding that it was “like a wet dream for a teenage boy” to create a play that was so successful that the only way for it to be stopped was for it to be banned,” Wickersham wrote.
Executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent scolded Lurie specifically for making the “wet dream” comment in front of women who were present in the room.
Regardless of how team owners felt about Lurie’s speech, the vote didn’t pass. It was close, though. There needed to be 24 teams on board for a new rule to pass, but only 22 voted in favor of it.
The Eagles have mastered the play that has caused their opponents great struggles in trying to stop it. And now with the play staying put, opposing teams will have to continue to try to figure out how to stop it.
