Chelsea are keen to sign a world-class English defender this summer. They are joined by Newcastle United in the race. But, the both Premier League clubs have been handed a major blow in the pursuit.
The star in question here is Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace. The 24 year old just helped his club to win their first ever major trophy. He is rated very highly by Palace who have handed him the captain’s armband. But, Guehi’s story at Palace is very likely to end this summer.
Guehi will enter the final year of his contract this summer. He has opted against signing an extension in order to join a bigger club. Hence, Palace have made him available in market to avoid losing him for free next summer.
Chelsea are keen to sign some top defenders this summer. They have identifed Guehi as their top target. The 24 year old came through Chelsea’s academy and is well known within the club. Hence, the Blues have advantage in trying to sign him.
On the other hand, Newcastle United also won their first trophy after very long time. They are now favourites to play in UCL next season. Eddie Howe wants to keep winning trophies and hence is keen to strengthen their squad even further.

According to The Sun, both Chelsea and Newcastle have been handed blow in the pursuit of Guehi. The report states that the 24 year old is eyeing a move to Spain. He wants to join either Real Madrid or Barcelona.
It will be interesting to see if either of Real Madrid or Barcelona are interested to sign Guehi. Madrid have just signed Dean Huijsen for £50 million so they might not make another defensive signing. As for Barca, they have good depth but if Araujo decides to leave, they might enter the defender market.
