Arsenal legend Ian Wright has questioned remarks made by Paul Merson and others that Mikel Arteta could be sacked by Christmas if the Gunners are not in the top two.
The North London club are set to finish runners-up for the third consecutive season under the Spaniard’s management but Wright says Arteta’s job is not under threat even if things take a turn for the worse next campaign:

“No way would he be sacked if he’s not in the top two by Christmas. Probably be third. Probably be third by a couple of points. There’s no way. His journey is still happening for him.”
Arteta will be backed to the hilt in the transfer market over the coming weeks. Speaking to Wright earlier this week, Arteta made a point of saying it will be a “big summer”, hinting at the arrival of some major signings.

One of the reasons why Arteta has started to come under pressure is the lack of silverware. The Spaniard can point to progress in terms of reaching the Champions League semi-final, as well as finishing 2nd once again.
However, supporters have seen Liverpool win the title in Arne Slot’s first season in charge, while the likes of Newcastle and Crystal Palace have lifted domestic cups this campaign. Patience among some sections of the fanbase is beginning to wear thin.
This summer could be a defining moment in Arteta’s tenure
The Gunners need to bring in players who can push them to the next level; difference makers who can transform them from contenders into winners.
It means the onus is on Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta to get things right in the transfer market. The board are set to back them with the necessary funds so we shall have to wait and see who is brought in between now and the start of next season.
