James Maddison has taunted John Terry as he celebrated Tottenham’s Europa League triumph.

Ange Postecoglou’s side beat Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao, sparking jubilant scenes of celebrations from the players and coaching staff, including those who missed the final due to injury.

Maddison was ruled out of the game with a knee injury but was still pitchside to support his team-mates, even coming on the pitch after full-time to celebrate. But the 28-year-old soon returned sporting a full kit ahead of the trophy ceremony.

“They said I had to, to get a medal. I didn’t want to do a John Terry when he went in the full kit with the shinpads and that,” Maddison said speaking to TNT Sports.

Maddison was referencing Terry’s infamous full kit trophy lift in 2012 when he lifted the Champions League trophy. Choosing not to modestly wear a suit to the trophy lift after he had missed the final through suspension, JT bounced up the Allianz Arena steps with his shin pads and boots on.

The England midfielder also took to Instagram to poke fun at the Chelsea legend. He posed on the San Mames pitch with Brennan Johnson, the trophy and their medals, adding the caption: “To kit. Full @johnterry.26 mode. Anything to say tonight John? (laughing face emoji, white heart emoji)”.

Terry and Maddison previously began their spat when the former Blues defender took to social media to share his joy celebrating Chelsea’s 4-1 win over Tottenham last season, where Ange Postecoglou was slammed for his tactics as Spurs left themselves open at will.

"When Chelsea beat Spurs 4-1 on a school night and the tequila comes out, and you end up dancing and singing on the bar," wrote Terry.

But Maddison fired back, referencing Tottenham’s dominance during the early stages of the game: "Jesus, you have your eyes closed when it was 11 vs 11 (in the) first 15 (minutes) JT?"

However, Terry had the last laugh as he pointed to Spurs’ woeful record against Chelsea, with Spurs winning just eight of their 64 Premier League meetings since the turn of the century at that point. "Don't worry mate you will get used to it," replied Terry, adding laughing faces.

Terry is yet to bite back, and he may only choose to do so if Chelsea beat Nottingham Forest to secure a Champions League spot on Sunday before their Europa Conference League final on Wednesday against Real Betis.
