Chelsea legend fires back at James Maddison's dig following Tottenham's Europa League win

After James Maddison won the Europa League final with Tottenham Hotspur, beating Manchester United 1-0 at the San Mames Stadium, the Englishman was quick to poke fun at John Terry. The former Chelsea captain has now responded.

Ange Postecoglou delivered on his statement that he always wins silverware in his second season by guiding the north Londoners to victory in Spain as Brennan Johnson’s scruffy goal in the 42nd minute opened and closed the scoring.

Ruben Amorim’s men, spearheaded and captained by Bruno Fernandes, failed to respond before the full-time whistle, and it was, therefore, a night of celebration for those associated with Spurs after they won their first major trophy in 17 years.

Terry Fires Back at Maddison’s 'Full Kit' Dig

Maddison: 'Full John Terry mode. Anything to say John?'

Maddison, who missed playing in the final through injury, was on the touchline to help get his teammates over the line in their biggest game in modern history – and he spoke to CBS Sports following the north Londoners’ 1-0 win over the Red Devils and poked fun at former midfielder-turned-pundit Roy Keane.

In a separate interview, the attacking midfielder – widely regarded as one of the best free-kick takers in world football – referenced Terry and that he wore his full kit for the trophy presentation, just like the Chelsea man did back during his playing days.

Famously, the former defender appeared head-to-toe in full kit following Chelsea’s Champions League triumph in 2012 despite being suspended for the showpiece – and Maddison referenced that in his post-match interview. Per TNT Sports, he said:

“I did not want to do a John Terry when he went in the full kit with the shinpads and that. I know I played a big part in the lead up and I deserved this just as much as all of us.”

He took it one step further and prodded the former England international on Instagram by saying: “From suit to kit. Full John Terry mode. Anything to say John?”

In response, Terry took to social media to respond to Maddison’s subtle dig as he joked about Spurs’ dismal Premier League campaign – as things stand, Postecoglou’s men are 17th in the table. He also showed off his ladened trophy cabinet.

“I remember my first trophy. Ah, bless them,” the 44-year-old wrote. “Get the tequila out from you boys, you should all be proud! 16 to go… after that performance, I think you have a chance. You just have to live for 900 years.”

The morning following the final, Barking-born Terry posted a photo of his bloated trophy cabinet, which contains a plethora of England caps, at least three Premier League trophies and the solitary Champions League trophy. Maddison just had to respond, didn't he? Taking to Instagram, too, he wrote: "Nice to see you took it well mate. Oooooft. COYS."
