Wesley Steiner’s NFL Cinderella story came to an abrupt end on Wednesday when the former Auburn linebacker was waived by the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Raiders signed Steiner on May 12 after he attended Las Vegas’ rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.
But on Wednesday, the Raiders signed linebacker Michael Barrett and waived Steiner to make room for the former Michigan standout on Las Vegas’ offseason roster.
A seventh-round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2024, Barrett went to the Seattle Seahawks on Aug. 22 in a trade for cornerback Michael Jackson, a former Spain Park High School standout. Barrett spent time on the practice squads of the Seahawks, Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers in 2024 without appearing in a regular-season game.
Steiner played at Auburn from 2020 through 2023, then transferred to Washington State for the 2024 season.
Steiner returned to Auburn on March 24 for the Tigers’ annual pro day. Steiner’s 4.39-second 40-yard dash and 39-inch vertical jump were the best of any of the participants. But Steiner did not get chosen in the NFL Draft April 24-26.
