Wow: Arsenal want to sign 'one of the best strikers in the world' from La Liga alongside…

Arsenal are ‘very interested’ in a surprise summer move for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, journalist Matias Palacios has reported.

The Gunners are reportedly set to hold a meeting with the Argentinian forward’s representatives next week over a potential move to the Emirates, almost 12 months after he left Manchester City for the Spanish capital.

Atletico are believed to be open to Alvarez’s departure if they can make a profit on the 2022 World Cup winner, who joined Diego Simeone’s side for £81.5m last summer.

Alvarez became Atletico’s second-most expensive signing last August, behind only Joao Felix, for whom Los Colchoneros paid a whopping £113m in 2019.

According to Palacios, Alvarez’s impressive first season at the Wanda Metropolitano has sparked interest from several top European clubs, with Arsenal potentially facing competition from Liverpool and Bayern Munich this summer.

The Gunners are expected to bolster Mikel Arteta’s frontline in the upcoming window and have placed the signing of a new striker at the top of their agenda.

While the likes of Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko remain on the radar, Alvarez could soon emerge as another interesting option alongside Real Madrid winger Rodrygo.

The Argentinian ace, praised as ‘one of the best strikers in the world’, would bring considerable Premier League experience to North London, having made 67 appearances and scored 20 goals in the English top flight during his time at Man City.

Arsenal are likely to welcome Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as their first summer signing and are expected to splash out £51m on the Spain international.

Zubimendi is set to arrive as a replacement for Jorginho, who is expected to join Brazilian side Flamengo in the coming weeks.
