Everton are in the race for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.

The former Manchester City star is in high demand after a remarkable campaign in the Premier League in which he notched 12 goals.

David Moyes has publicly spoken about wanting to bring the 22-year-old to the Hill Dickinson Stadium and there has been a new twist in the pursuit of his signature.

Everton set to lose out on Delap signing

The Blues were facing tough competition for Delap with the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle interested in the forward.

It appears that Enzo Maresca’s side have stolen a march on their rivals after a joint report from Ben Jacobs and Alex Crook revealed that they have held positive talks.

Delap would have been a great signing for Everton

Given the fact that the Toffees desperately lacked goals this season and the £30million release clause, it would have been a brilliant deal.

However, it was always unlikely that they could pull it off, with the interest from clubs in the Champions League expected to prove too tempting.

If he does indeed sign for the Londoners, Moyes and Co must move on quickly to alternative targets, because their record in front of goal is a huge concern.

Beto notched eight goals in 30 matches in the top-flight and Dominic Calvert-Lewin hit just three in an injury-ravaged campaign and could be set to exit with his contract running out on 30 June.

Armando Broja is set to return to his parent club after just 10 appearances for the Goodison Park outfit, in which he failed to record a goal.

Meanwhile, Youssef Chermiti featured only four times, due to fitness issues and is still very young, so he cannot be relied upon to make an impact in the first-team fold.

If Moyes is to take his side higher up the table, towards a European place, he needs to secure a reliable goalscorer this summer.
