Eberechi Eze puts Man Utd icons on notice as £68m transfer instruction issued

Manchester United legends Dwight Yorke and Paul Scholes agree the Red Devils should splurge £68million on Eberechi Eze this summer. The 26-year-old has been a standout player at Crystal Palace since his arrival in 2020, with the 2024/25 season marking his best campaign yet.

Eze scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists for Oliver Glasner's team, including scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Manchester City, which clinched the Eagles' first-ever major silverware. His stellar performances have not gone unnoticed, with transfer links to top-flight rivals such as Tottenham Hotspur emerging in the past year. And during England’s 3-1 defeat to Senegal on Tuesday, where Eze played the full 90 minutes, United icon Scholes saw enough evidence to believe he would thrive at Old Trafford. He took to Instagram during the match to post a picture of Eze in an England shirt with a three-word transfer plea, telling United head coach Ruben Amorim to: “Just buy him.”

Eze reportedly has a £68m release clause in his Palace contract, which can be activated this summer. Scholes' plea echoes the thoughts of his former Red Devils team-mate, Dwight Yorke, who last month called upon United to pursue Eze.

“Eberechi Eze at Crystal Palace would be perfect for Manchester United," Yorke pointed out. “Yeah, he scored at the weekend in the FA Cup final, but it’s not just about that. A year ago, maybe more, I said this kid and Michael Olise – who went to Bayern – United should buy them for £100m.

“Put £100m down and you will get two fantastic players. Instead, they listened to the figures in the hierarchy, which is understandable, but it’s glaring just how good these two are. Eze has the decision-making, the talent, he’s a good athlete, he can create and score. He’s at the right age to step up and play on a bigger platform. It’s a no-brainer.”

The former QPR starlet was once again exceptional for England this week despite a dismal overall team performance. He shone in a central role, winning the ball from Lamine Camara in the build-up to England's first goal.

However, he truly came into his own after the 60-minute mark, linking superbly with substitutes Morgan Gibbs-White and Morgan Rogers as he orchestrated England's most potent phase of the match.

Despite thriving in a No. 10 role, Eze would likely slot in just behind the striker in Amorim's signature 3-4-2-1 formation if United manage to secure his services. Such a deal could also see him teaming up with the likes of Bruno Fernandes and new arrival Matheus Cunha to form an exhilarating new attacking trio.

United are, however, prioritising the acquisition of a new striker and seem to have settled on Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo over other attack-minded midfielders like Eze, following the announcement that Fernandes will remain at the club this summer. Viktor Gyokeres is understood to be a top target, although United have also been linked with Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko to a lesser extent.
