Cody Gakpo's Liverpool future now lies in the balance after major Fabrizio Romano update - opinion

Cody Gakpo is one of many Liverpool players who have received plaudits for the way they’ve performed this season.

The Dutchman has been played at both left wing and striker, with Arne Slot entrusting the former PSV man to lead his attacking line on more than one occasion.

Alongside Luis Diaz, Gakpo’s returns this term have been among the best in the Reds’ squad, with only Mohamed Salah outperforming them both.

However, due to Gakpo’s recent form, teams have started circling around the attacker and look set to test the waters on whether a deal could be agreed.

Bayern Munich set to lose Leroy Sane which could pave the way for a Cody Gakpo move

One of the teams that has been linked with an interest in Gakpo is Bayern Munich.

The reigning Bundesliga champions have seemingly been beaten to the transfer of Florian Wirtz by Liverpool, but now it seems like they’ve set their eyes on Gakpo.

And, as per a report from Fabrizio Romano, a move for the Dutchman could be on the cards sooner than many think.

That’s because the transfer guru has reported that Leroy Sane will become a Galatasaray player over the coming days, leaving a gap in Bayern’s squad that needs to be filled.

Liverpool cannot allow Cody Gakpo to exit Anfield this summer

There’s no denying that Liverpool are set for a summer of change, but letting Gakpo go would be a massive mistake.

Diaz and Darwin Nunez are already being linked with an Anfield exit, with the latter of the two even having an enquiry made from Al-Hilal.

Indeed, Diaz would only leave Liverpool for Barcelona and with their financial situation still up in the air, a move for the former Porto man may never come to fruition.

But, just in case it does, it means that Slot could be two attackers down before the 2025-26 season even kicks off.

And, if Gakpo’s departure was added on top of that, Liverpool would find themselves in something of a crisis.

Therefore, this is why Gakpo cannot be allowed to exit Anfield this summer, especially if a new striker isn’t brought in.

At the end of the day, as much as the eventual upgrades to the Reds’ ranks would be appreciated, the players they currently have at their disposal are more than solid options.
