Manchester United’s summer overhaul is well underway as Ruben Amorim and INEOS reshape the squad following a frustrating 2024/25 campaign.

With Matheus Cunha already secured and more expected, the club’s retained and released list has offered a glimpse into the future – and a nod to the past.

While the focus has been on high-profile exits and marquee arrivals, the changes at academy level are just as telling of United’s long-term direction.

Six youth players will officially leave the club at the end of June, including a familiar name from the club’s 2022 FA Youth Cup-winning side.

And one of them has now spoken publicly for the first time since learning his journey at Old Trafford has come to an end.

Left-back Sam Murray has confirmed his departure from Manchester United after seven years at the club, delivering a heartfelt message to fans and staff.

The 20-year-old joined United from Huddersfield Town in 2017 and developed into a dependable figure for both the Under-18 and Under-21 teams during his spell at Carrington.

He played a vital role in United’s Youth Cup triumph in 2022, showcasing his attacking energy and defensive intelligence from the left flank.

Posting on Instagram, Murray wrote: “After seven years, my time at Manchester United has come to an end.

“I would like to thank everyone at the club for your support, especially my coaches and teammates over the years.

“It’s been a privilege to represent this club, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunities and experience this club has given me.

“I wish everyone the best of luck for the future. Once a red. Muz.”

Sam Murray signed his first professional contract with the Red Devils in May 2023 and was given several opportunities to travel with the first team.

He was included in United’s winter training camp in Spain in December 2022 under then-manager Erik ten Hag, and also featured in the pre-season opener against Rosenborg in Norway.

However, the full-back never made a competitive appearance for the senior side and has now been released as part of United’s summer clear-out.

With his contract expiring at the end of June, Murray will now look to the next chapter of his career – leaving Old Trafford with the backing of many who saw his potential from day one.
