Man United were offered Premier League winner but Ineos rightly walked away from £425k wages

Ineos have tried to keep Manchester United’s wage bill in check since completing a takeover at Old Trafford.

In the past decade, Manchester United have often had one of the biggest wage bills in English football but underachieved in the Premier League.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe pointed out that Ruben Amorim is working with a much smaller wage bill than previous United managers as the club looks to overhaul the squad.

Some of the club’s top earners such as Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho are up for sale this summer after being loaned out in 2024/25. Combined, their exits will take around £600,000 per week away from the wages being paid at United.

Man United rejected Leroy Sane offer and wage demand shows why

It was no secret that United needed to improve their attack this summer and already Ineos have added Matheus Cunha to Amorim’s ranks.

Just last month it was reported that United were offered the chance to sign Leroy Sane when his Bayern Munich contract expired at the end of June.

Sane insisted he was not concerned about wages at his new club, but it was reported on Wednesday that the former Premier League champion is set to join Galatasaray on an eye-watering salary.

David Ornstein reports that Sane has agreed a deal worth €15m (£12.7m) net per year. Football finance expert Stefan Borson points out that in terms of gross spend, that equates to €500k (£425k) per week in wages.

If United had agreed to pay that to Sane then he would immediately become Manchester United’s highest earner, topping the £350,000 per week paid to Casemiro.

Ineos are becoming more sensible with Man United wage offers

Ineos are currently finding it hard to shift players who signed huge contracts under the Glazer ownership such as Rashford, Sancho and Antony.

Sancho is refusing to cut his wages to leave Old Trafford this summer, while Rashford is determined to join Barcelona even though the Spanish giants cannot afford him.

In order to avoid the same trouble in future seasons, Ineos are now being more considerate with the wages being paid to new signings.

Cunha is set to earn £200,000 per week while in January, Patrick Dorgu agreed a £38,500 per week deal.

As negotiations continue for Bryan Mbeumo, reports suggest United are willing to pay Mbeumo £250,000 per week to get the deal over the line.
