Former Patriots QB has been ‘incredible,’ lighting up camp with new team

It looks like Dallas might be coming down with a case of Joe Milton fever. It’s a terrible affliction that plagued New England just last year.

Symptoms include fawning over amazing throws during unpadded practice and marveling at a quarterback doing backflips with a helmet on.

Since being traded to the Cowboys for minor draft compensation, the former Patriots quarterback has made a strong impression with his new team.

Fans have marveled at his athleticism. Media have taken note of his brilliant performances so far during mini camp.

“I can already hear it now,” Cowboys reporter Bobby Belt said on 105.3 The Fan. “You’re going to hear so much of the ‘why isn’t Joe Milton starting? We should have Joe Milton starting.’ Because you’re going to see it.

As another Cowboys outlet put it, Dallas’ staff "seem enamored with the strong-armed Milton."

That’s an easy leap to make when first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer is out here handing out high praise to the second-year quarterback for the way he’s handled himself.

“So excited about Joe,” Schottenheimer said. “I was excited about Joe before we got him. We all reach out to people that you know. People that you trust, people that have been exposed to said player in college, in different programs, friends that have been around him to this day. … From the time he’s been here. The work ethic is incredible.”

The 25-year-old quarterback is one of the most impressive players at his position. At 6-foot-5, 246 pounds with a cannon of an arm and the ability to make plays with his legs, Milton is capable of some incredible highlights.

Milton showed off his potential last season in New England, displaying some flashes during the preseason and in the Patriots’ season-ending win in Week 18.

But will that translate to Milton climbing up the Cowboys depth chart and handling the offense against tougher competition? That’s the real question.

The Patriots drafted Milton in the sixth round last year, adding some late-round insurance at the quarterback position behind No. 3 pick Drake Maye.

With Maye cementing himself as the franchise quarterback and a new coaching staff coming in, the Patriots opted to trade Milton and a seventh-round pick for a fifth-round pick.

Will Milton make New England look silly for dealing him away? It’s way too early to tell. If last year’s case of Milton fever is any indication, symptoms may start to fade after the preseason games end.
