49ers Insider Urges Blockbuster Trade Idea Involving WR Brandon Aiyuk

The 2025 NFL season is coming up quickly and the San Francisco 49ers are hoping to get back to being a serious contender in the NFC. After a rough 2024 season, the team is hungry and ready to get this season underway.

One of the main issues last year was injury trouble. Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk, in particular, missed most of the season, which hampered the offenses ability to play to its potential.

Entering this season, the 49ers should have both players back on the field. They also were able to get a long-term extension done with both Brock Purdy and George Kittle. On the outside looking in, the offense should get back to being a dangerous unit.

That being said, one San Francisco insider has suggested that the team pursue a blockbuster trade that would involve sending Aiyuk out of town.

Sports Illustrated analyst Grant Cohn believes that the 49ers should try to acquire Terry McLaurin from the Washington Commanders. He thinks Aiyuk could be sent to the Commanders as part of the deal.

"McLaurin is older than Aiyuk, but he's also faster than Aiyuk and might have a better relationship with the quarterback," Cohn wrote. "I'm guessing McLaurin would love to play for the 49ers if they extend him. And I'm guessing Aiyuk would love to play with Daniels and Deebo Samuel in Washington."

McLaurin would be a huge pickup for San Francisco. He would be an upgrade for the 49ers over Aiyuk, although he is older, as Cohn noted.

During the 2024 NFL season with Washington, McLaurin caught 82 passes for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. Aiyuk, on the other hand, played in seven games and caught 25 passes for 374 yards and no touchdowns.

From a fit perspective, this trade could make a lot of sense for the 49ers. Moving on from Aiyuk would be a difficult decision, but McLaurin's style would fit well alongside Purdy.

More than likely, this suggestion will not become a reality. It seems likely that the Commanders will do everything they can to re-sign McLaurin. San Francisco will be hoping that Aiyuk can show off the No. 1 wide receiver talent that made them give him such a big contract last offseason.

While the suggestion is not a bad one, a trade involving both Aiyuk and McLaurin would be surprising to see this offseason.
