Man City close to record-breaking deal for ‘elite’ star Arsenal wanted to sign alongside Zubimendi - Ornstein

Manchester City and Arsenal are two of the biggest and best clubs in the Premier League, routinely locking horns on the pitch and in the transfer market.

Although Manchester City didn’t have the best of seasons in 2024/25, they have already embarked on a squad rebuild and will look to challenge again next term.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are yet to lift the coveted Premier League title under Mikel Arteta and they will want to finally go all the way in 2025/26.

Now, David Ornstein has reported that City have secured a big victory over Arsenal in the transfer market, landing an “elite” talent ahead of the Gunners.

Manchester City set to sign Sverre Nypan ahead of Arsenal

Ornstein has reported that City are closing in on agreement for Rosenborg prodigy Sverre Nypan, a player Arsenal tried to sign earlier this year.

Arsenal were confident of signing Nypan in January, but the midfielder opted to delay his decision after talking with a number of clubs.

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey confirmed earlier this year that Arsenal wanted Nypan as their second important midfield addition after Martin Zubimendi.

However, Nypan is now City-bound and, subject to personal terms being finalised, it will be a record fee for a player from the Norwegian league, claimed Ornstein.

Nypan is expected to go out on a season-long loan to continue his development, added Ornstein.

What Sverre Nypan could bring to the Premier League

Nypan is the latest Norwegian wonderkid to emerge following the likes of Martin Odegaard, Erling Haaland, and Antonio Nusa.

At just 18 years of age, Nypan has already made 70 appearances for Rosenborg, registering an impressive 14 goals and 11 assists.

He is a technically gifted player with an impressive football IQ, whose abilities to pass and carry the ball, as well as creating chances and scoring goals, are at a very high level.

Nypan’s talent and potential have seen him earn comparisons with Odegaard, one of the most exciting wonderkids of his day, and now fulfilling his potential at Arsenal.

“Sverre Nypan is extremely exciting, and I get a bit of the same feeling as when I saw Martin Odegaard break through as a boy,” Norwegian football expert Jesper Mathisen told TV2 in August 2023.

Meanwhile, journalist Steve Kay has described Nypan as an “elite” talent.
