Amorim asks Man Utd to sign ‘world-class’ star to replace £200,000-a-week flop - journalist

Manchester United could make a surprise move for long-serving Barcelona star Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to come into their goalkeeping ranks for next season, according to reports - with Andre Onana's error-prone behaviour being an area of priority to upgrade.

Onana's two seasons at Old Trafford have seen United win one trophy, but also record their two-lowest Premier League finishes under both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. That means the Portuguese gaffer could look to shake up his goalkeeping contingent and Ter Stegen has emerged as a potential target.

The report by journalist Sebastien Vidal on X (formerly Twitter) states that United are 'seeking' targets to replace Onana - who is on an estimated £200,000-a-week - after a mediocre season at Old Trafford has seen him come under scrutiny, after poor performances became littered with errors.

With that in mind, Barcelona stopper Ter Stegen is in their sights, with the arrival of Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia set to be announced shortly - ultimately pushing the 33-year-old 'world-class' stopper down the pecking order at the Camp Nou.

An upgrade in the goalkeeping department has been 'demanded' by Amorim, especially with backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir failing to impress during his time at Old Trafford, and that could see the Turkish star also depart with interest from elsewhere.

Ter Stegen, who has 44 caps for Germany, began his career at Borussia Monchengladbach as a four-year-old, progressing through to the first-team shortly before his 19th birthday - and he became the reason they survived in the Bundesliga at the end of the 2010/11 campaign.

The German made 127 appearances for his hometown club before departing for Catalonia, and in the 2016/17 campaign, he became their first-choice goalkeeper - a run that only came unstuck earlier this season after eight years as their first-choice.

With 422 games for Barcelona heralding six La Liga titles, six Copa del Rey winner's medals, a Champions League and the Club World Cup, Ter Stegen has obvious title-winning capabilities - and even though United finished a while away from the summit of the Premier League, his experience will be key to seeing them fly up the table to avoid the pain of last season.
