How Diogo Jota can persuade 'amazing' Liverpool player to join Wolves this summer - opinion

Wolves fans will always remember the wonderful moments Diogo Jota brought to Molineux during his three-year stint.

The Portuguese forward was initially signed on loan from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2017, with Nuno Espirito Santo making his move permanent in January 2018.

Wolves always knew Jota was a ‘serious player’, backing up that claim with 44 goals and 19 assists in 131 appearances for the Old Gold.

Jota has become an excellent star at Anfield since moving there in 2020, and although injuries have often held him back, the 28-year-old has still clinched the Premier League, FA Cup and two Carabao Cups in five years.

Now, with Arne Slot assembling a squad full of superstars after winning the title, one of Jota’s teammates could become available.

Diogo Jota can persuade Kostas Tsimikas to join Wolves

Wolves have been linked with Jota but were instantly told a return for the Portuguese international was unlikely, especially with Jota’s £42.5 million price tag.

Aside from the former Molineux hero, Wolves have targeted attacking midfielder Harvey Elliott, who is desperate for first-team football after just two league starts in 2024/25.

Worryingly, Liverpool have slapped a £40 million price tag on Elliott, and that is far too much to pay for someone who needs to fill Matheus Cunha’s void.

So, instead of attempting to capture the 22-year-old, Wolves should try sign left-back Kostas Tsimikas, who is surplus to requirements at Anfield.

The Reds are closing in on the signature of Milos Kerkez, who will battle with Andy Robertson for a starting spot, leaving the ‘amazing’ Tsimikas third in the pecking order.

Now 29-years-old, the Greek international needs to be playing regularly, and with a reported price tag of £15 million, Wolves could do far worse than signing him to replace Rayan Ait-Nouri after his transfer to Manchester City.

After spending an incredible three years at Wolves, Jota could persuade the left-back to snub other interested clubs and move to Molineux.

What Tsimikas would bring to Wolves

There were complaints last season that not enough ammunition was fired into Jorgen Strand Larsen, someone who benefits from crosses being sent into the box.

But with Tsimikas known for his pinpoint crossing, the 42-cap Greek international could rival Hugo Bueno for a spot at wing-back, creating some strong competition.

The former Olympiacos star has provided an impressive 10 assists in just 66 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, despite mostly playing behind Robertson.

Meanwhile, with six assists in 27 Champions League matches, he’s also shown he can flex his wand of a left foot on the big stage.

Wolves may be chasing Gerard Martin from Barcelona, but with the persuasion of Jota, perhaps Tsimikas is another option they should place on their list.
