The Man Utd forward faces an uncertain future after Chelsea rejected their obligation to purchase him.
Chelsea have officially confirmed they will not exercise their obligation to buy Jadon Sancho from Manchester United in the summer transfer window. The 25-year-old joined the London club on a season-long loan a year ago, which included an obligation to purchase him for at least £20 million.
However, the Blues also included a penalty clause that would see them pay United £5m if they wanted to avoid a purchase. Sancho held talks with Chelsea over a possible permanent move, but those talks collapsed after a disagreement over wage demands.
It means Sancho will now return to United for his pre-season training programme, though the club still intend to sell him this summer. Although it has been known the forward would return to Old Trafford for a while now, it was not until Wednesday afternoon that Chelsea made their decision official.

A club statement read: "Chelsea Football Club can confirm Jadon Sancho will return to Manchester United following the conclusion of his loan. Sancho, 25, joined on a season-long loan on August 31 2024 and went on to make a total of 41 appearances for the club. "The winger registered five goals during his time at Stamford Bridge, with his final strike coming in the Blues' UEFA Conference League Final victory against Real Betis on May 28. Everyone at Chelsea would like to thank Jadon for his efforts and we wish him every success for the future."
Dortmund director addresses Sancho reunion
Jadon Sancho has already played for Borussia Dortmund twice in his senior career and the Manchester United forward has been linked with a sensational third move to the German club.
Sancho joined Dortmund from City in 2017 before he moved to United for £73 million four years ago. He returned to the Bundesliga side on loan in the second-half of the 2023/24 season and helped them reach the Champions League final, which they lost to Real Madrid.
A return to Dortmund would still likely hold some appeal for both parties, though the club’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, insists they are currently looking at other options in the summer window. “Of course, contact with Jadon is always there, in some way, because we have a very long history,” he said today. “But it’s not an issue for us right now. We have other priorities at the moment and that’s why the Sancho issue was probably played up more in the media than discussed internally.”
