The Knicks officially requested to interview Jason Kidd for head coach job, ESPN reports

The New York Knicks requested permission Wednesday to interview Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd for their head coaching vacancy — a request that the Mavs denied, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Kidd was one of three current head coaches the Knicks have requested interviews from and been denied, alongside the Houston Rockets’ Ime Udoka and the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Chris Finch.

However, the Athletic’s James Edwards reported that despite an official denial, the Knicks are not expected to stop pursuing Kidd.

It was previously reported that Kidd did have interest in the Knicks job, and there are still ways New York could end up with Kidd as their coach.

The Knicks could work out a trade agreement with the Mavs, though it would almost certainly require draft compensation.

The Knicks fired their head coach, Tom Thibodeau, despite leading the team to their first conference finals in decades this season in a bid to help the franchise win its first championship since 1973.

Kidd heads into his fifth season as head coach of the Dallas Mavs.
