Liverpool appear set to conclude what will almost certainly be the biggest transfer of the 2025 summer window, with recent reports of a fee agreement with Bayer Leverkusen over the transfer of superstar attacker Florian Wirtz now followed by news of a medical.
According to the latest out of Germany via Süddeutsche Zeitung, a medical is expected to take place on Thursday with both the transfer fee and personal terms with the player fully agreed. Munich-based SZ are the outlet that in fact first reported Wirtz was in England last month to meet with Liverpool and not Manchester City as others reported at the time.
In recent days, reporting on the mega-money transfer from club-connected sources in England has lagged behind those reporting based on sources appearing to be on the German end—be they with Bayer Leverkusen or possibly from within Wirtz’ camp.
As such, talk of a top-line €150M fee has to be read within the context of it likely being how Bayer want the world to perceive the transfer, and there have already been suggestions that the final €15M or so bridging the gap between previous Liverpool’s offers and Leverkusen’s valuation of the player will be made up of very difficult to achieve add-ons.
Exactly what very difficult to achieve could mean is impossible to know, but the expectation would be it would be tied to things like Wirtz winning the Ballon d’Or or the club winning multiple Champions Leagues. All of which is to say if Liverpool eventually have to pay the full fee it’s likely to mean the transfer was a massive success.
