£85m bid could make Liverpool say"hmm"as debate rages over selling sensational star

Liverpool could sell Luis Diaz this summer and with his contract set to expire in 2027, there is a lot of debate over whether or not the Reds should hold onto him.

I’ve said this in previous posts but I don’t think it makes sense to sell him this summer based not only on the lack of high quality left wingers on the market but also on how good he is.

This season, the Colombian scored 17 goals in all competitions while playing out of position as a false nine. He also contributed eight assists all while being the perfect pressing trigger up top.

When you consider how good he is on the ball, off the ball and his familiarity with the squad, selling him now even if that means he will leave for free in two years just doesn’t make total sense.

His goal against Argentina in the early hours of Wednesday morning just further highlights the quality that Liverpool will have to replace.

The big factor may be that for a 28-year-old, Diaz isn’t earning what a top forward in Europe should be. His wage, according to Capology, is £55,000 per week – a good £95,000 less than Darwin Nunez receives weekly.

For that reason alone, it’s no surprise that Diaz wants a move to Barcelona given he would automatically receive a massive increase on his current earnings.

In order to do that without moving, he would need to convince the club to offer him a new deal which would take him into his 30s which we already know is very difficult to do with FSG.

Ian Doyle wades into the Luis Diaz conversation with insight into Liverpool’s thinking

“So, yeah, I mean, and Diaz as well, I’m not sure whether they are massively keen to give him a new contract. I don’t know,” Ian Doyle said on the Liverpool ECHO’s Blood Red Podcast.

“Yeah, they’re not pushing to do it. Not that they won’t do it, but he’s got two years left, and because he’s 28, it looks like, well, we’ll just see how things go.

“Whether that involves Saudi Arabia coming in with a bid for £85 million, then you go, hmm.”

If Liverpool do sell Diaz, who would be the right replacement?

This is where it gets really problematic for Liverpool.

The perfect replacement would be Kvicha Kvaratshkelia but after winning the Champions League with PSG just months after joining them, he would likely cost even more than the reported £126m the Reds are paying to sign Florian Wirtz.

All in all, there aren’t many ideal replacements that wouldn’t require LFC to break the bank.

Perhaps the solution is a one or two year extension to appease Diaz’s desire to earn more while the club searches for a replacement for next summer.
