Man United and Arsenal are both looking to sign a striker this summer, and they have been linked to the same one

Man United are desperate to add a number nine this summer to play ahead of the likes of Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes, who will be able to feed in the target man striker, whoever that striker might end up being.

They have been heavily linked to several world-class attackers, including Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres and Dusan Vlahovic, but as things stand, it is unclear as to which one United will enter the season with. However, they could be preparing to submit a bid for one of them very soon.

Man United and Arsenal tipped to bid for Viktor Gyokeres

Seeing as the Red Devils have a glaring need for goals, a striker who has scored 54 goals in 52 games last term would seem the perfect signing, although he isn’t expected to come cheaply. Sporting are reportedly demanding a fee of around €80m (£68m) for the Swedish international, a figure that could be hard for United to match, considering they’ve already spent £62.5m on Matheus Cunha.

However, despite that, Spanish outlet Fichajes claims that both Arsenal and Man United are ready to ‘submit an offer’ for Gyokeres, and are both hoping that they can land him in the coming weeks. This comes as a slight surprise considering that the Gunners are seemingly prioritising a move for RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko.

Man United would hope that they can persuade Gyokeres to come to Old Trafford, despite the fact that they aren’t in the Champions League next season. The lure of working with Amorim again may be able to tempt Gyokeres to come to the North West rather than North London.

What has Viktor Gyokeres said about Ruben Amorim?

The two worked together to produce immense success at Sporting after Amorim signed Gyokeres from Championship side Coventry City for a fee of just over £20m in 2023. Since then, the attacker has netted 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting, making him one of the most prolific goal scorers in world football.

He has previously spoken about his love for playing under Amorim, hinting that a potential reunion could be on the cards in the future. He praised Amorim and said about how he managed to impact both Gyokeres and his teammates’ mentality when they were winning.

He told Portuguese media, via the Mirror, earlier in the season: “I think when you're in that kind of moment where you keep winning, you go in with the same mentality as every game and you keep doing the same things and with the same rhythm. That's what we felt when we went into the games. It's possible to have those kinds of moments. I don't know if we would have kept the same level throughout the season.

“Let's see, it's the future, and it's football as well, so you never know what's going to happen. As you've seen this season, you never know what's going to happen, and it's the same now. We will see in the future."
