The Portland Trail Blazers have officially announced the new assistant coaching hires of Tiago Splitter, Patrick St. Andrews and Quinton Crawford. Additionally, the organization announced Rip City Remix assistant coach Leron Black has been promoted to a Trail Blazers player development coach.
The hiring of Crawford was initially reported at the end of May, and the hirings of Splitter and St. Andrews were reported on June 7. However, the promotion of Black had not been reported until the team’s official announcement on Wednesday.
Black spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach and director of video for the Remix, Portland’s G League affiliate. Before joining the Remix, Black also spent time as a graduate assistant with the University of Dayton Flyers, his tenure overlapping with Blazers forward Toumani Camara’s time at the school (H/T Kenny’s G League). Black played four years at the University of Illinois from 2014-18, scoring 921 points and recording 529 rebounds.
In late April, it was reported the Blazers didn’t renew the contracts of three assistant coaches for next season: Roy Rogers, Chris Fleming and Ryan Gomes. Additionally, on Tuesday, the organization announced Blazers assistant coach Jonah Herscu was leaving the staff to become the head coach of the Remix. The four hirings announced Wednesday fill the vacancies left by those departures.
It was reported in May that the Blazers re-signed assistant coaches Nate Bjorkgren and Ronnie Burrell, as well as analytics coach Jacob Mooallem.
