Ruben Amorim has made it clear to Jason Wilcox this summer that his Manchester United are lacking in two important attributes.
Following a disappointing season, Manchester United’s leadership team are wasting no time in reshaping their squad ahead of the new campaign.
Ruben Amorim has already secured his first signing with the arrival of Matheus Cunha, and the club’s attention has now shifted to Bryan Mbeumo, who is open to joining the Old Trafford side.
United are also in the market for a new striker, with multiple names, including Viktor Gyokeres, under consideration within the club.
Adding all three attacking targets would provide a major boost to a forward line that struggled significantly throughout last season.
Amorim told Wilcox that United squad are lacking in two ways
While the additions of all three of those players will help Amorim’s squad a lot, there are still several obvious areas across the squad which needs strengthening.
At wingback, it is likely that the Reds start with Patrick Dorgu on the left and Amad on the right heading into the new season.
Amorim is wary of the lack of ‘athleticism’ and ‘speed’ in wide areas – which will decrease even further if Alejandro Garnacho departs as he is one of the only players who wants to utilise his speed on the touchline.
This is something Amorim has already brought up to United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, and a potential signing in one of those areas cannot be ruled out.
Ben Jacobs told The United Stand: “My understanding is that Ruben Amorim has made it clear to Jason Wilcox and Christopher Vivell, ‘We’re lacking that athleticism and we’re lacking that speed in wide areas’.
“And this is why I think if Manchester United strengthen, you will find fast and physical players are added.”
United will turn to wingbacks after midfield
Once the frontline is fixed, United will likely turn their attention to bringing in a central midfielder to play alongside Bruno Fernandes.
After that, if enough sales have gone through, the wingback position is the most likely to be strengthened in the window.

Diego Leon is set to join this summer but he will likely have a similar integration plan to Sekou Kone – starting in the Under-21s when he arrives in Manchester.
Some would argue that a right wingback is more important to bring in as the options behind Amad are not ideal. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are both better suited to being in the back three.
