Baker Mayfield Reveals ‘Deep Thoughts’ for New Buccaneers

Baker Mayfield's reputation now that he's experienced a career reboot with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?

He's gritty and gutsy and smart.

And he can sling in.

Now along comes the the addition of his third offensive coordinator in three years ... and a new-look offense, to some degree.

After going from Dave Canales, to Liam Coen, to now Josh Grizzard, Baker has experienced far more than his fair share of changes since signing on with the No. 1 power the NFC South.

And he's been fine with all of that.

"I try not take take it for granted being in the same system since I am so used to learning new offenses," Mayfield said via CBS Sports. "Now it's just about the details. We have a great group. We have everybody back and added some pieces in the skill group. That makes it easier. I took a lot more responsibility last year, and I am taking even more ownership of it.

"When it comes to those checks at the line of scrimmage, it makes it a lot easier with the guys being back. They know when we get this blitz, and I am going to check to this play, it's second nature for them.

"When people don't have to think about it, it's a lot better."

But there is something else brewing.

During the 2024 season as the Bucs finished third in the league in passing yards, but to some degree, that's a bit deceptive as they were 29th in average air yards per passing attempt.

YAC is good.

But maybe "deep thoughts'' are also good?

“We’re trying to get some more explosive (plays) in,” Mayfield said, via the team’s website. “Obviously, when you look at the stats — I’m not a big stats guy, but we weren’t as much down-the-field explosive.

"We were creating a lot of open, in the middle, and guys getting some YAC.”

Again, nothing wrong with that. And with rookie first-rounder Emeka Egbuka joining a receiving corps that includes Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillian and Trey Palmer?

That scary bunch should be multi-dimensional. ... and that's what Mayfield is suggesting here.

There will be tweaks here and there under Grizzard, even as he's a first-time play-caller. So "new-look'' applies.

And maybe "deep thoughts'' from Baker Mayfield do, too.
