NBA rumors: New York Knicks pursuit of Jason Kidd far from over and could border on tampering?

Despite being denied their request to speak with Jason Kidd, a new rumor suggests the New York Knicks aren’t done trying to make the Hall of Famer their next head coach.

On Wednesday morning, the Knicks reportedly made an official request to talk to Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd about their head coach opening. However, the request was swiftly turned down. That would seemingly end their pursuit. Maybe not, according to The Athletic NBA insider James L. Edwards III.

“Another thing to consider with Knicks-Mavs-Kidd: multiple reports say DAL officially denied permission. If somehow this turns into a mess and this isn’t the end, which I’m hearing it might not be, hard to see how the NBA doesn’t intervene with tampering stuff,” he wrote in a post on Bluesky.

The Knicks are reportedly high on Kidd for several key reasons. Including his ability to deal with the media in New York. And a strong relationship he has with top star Jalen Brunson that was developed during their one season together in Dallas. Even Edwards III suggested on X that they could still make Dallas an offer even without talking to Kidd.

If they do have to pivot to coaches available on the open market, Edwards III says two veteran coaches are likely to be among the first interviews.

Story soon but I’ve gathered Brown and Jenkins are two names to watch. I know Twitter loves a certain, former assistant coach but have gotten no indications there he’ll be next head coach. Maybe gets an interview, though. https://t.co/Z2I98iYFl7

“Story soon, but I’ve gathered [Mike] Brown and [Taylor] Jenkins are two names to watch,” he wrote.

Brown (Sacramento Kings) and Jenkins (Memphis Grizzlies) were both fired during this past season. Both have had multiple winning seasons during their careers as head coaches in the league.
