Wirtz was Liverpool’s top priority this summer. Negotiations with the German side started two weeks ago, although the player had reportedly agreed on personal terms with Liverpool earlier.
Fabrizio Romano revealed that when many clubs were trying to convince the youngster to join them, it was Arne Slot who made the difference. The Dutch manager presented a very clear sporting project to Wirtz and convinced the midfielder to join Liverpool ahead of Manchester City or Bayern Munich.

Importance of Arne Slot in convincing Florian Wirtz to join Liverpool
Arne Slot seems to be playing a major role in convincing players. Jeremie Frimpong, Wirtz’s teammate at Bayer Leverkusen, joined Liverpool last month after Slot reportedly convinced him to make the move.
Something similar may have happened with Wirtz. As Romano said in his podcast, Arne Slot played a crucial part in the transfer, and the Dutch manager’s vision fully convinced Wirtz before making up his mind to join the Reds.
Slot joined Liverpool in 2024 after Jurgen Klopp’s departure. In his first season at Anfield, he guided the club to a convincing Premier League title win.
The Dutch tactician is expected to use Wirtz in a number 10 role—similar to what Jude Bellingham played at Real Madrid over the last two seasons. Slot may seek more creativity in midfield by pairing Wirtz with World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister.
