The San Antonio Spurs are in a great position to land Kevin Durant should they strike.

According to ESPN’s senior NBA insider Shams Charania, the Spurs are one of the five teams that have expressed interest in a blockbuster trade for Durant this summer.

A Durant trade is a foregone conclusion, as Charania reported that talks between the Phoenix Suns and Durant’s business partner, Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman, have escalated this past week.

They have met “multiple times over the past week and are sifting through trade scenarios.”

“Teams that have expressed interest in Durant, sources said, mainly feature the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks. Several wild-card suitors have made inquiries on Durant in the past seven to 10 days, sources said,” Charania wrote.

The only mystery left is where Durant is headed next.

Will it be San Antonio?

The Spurs have three tradable first-round picks, including this year’s No. 2 pick, which is likely Rutgers star Dylan Harper. But it will be unwise to deal the presumed No. 2 pick for a 37-year-old Durant. They could easily match Durant’s $54.7 million salary in a potential trade with the trio of Keldon Johnson, Harrison Barnes and Jeremy Sochan.

The potential holdup is the draft capital and the young player that the Suns would ask to include.

In April, Charania reported that Durant and the Spurs have mutual interest.

“Back at the NBA trade deadline, there was a list of teams with whom there was mutual interest with Kevin Durant,” Charania said on “The Pat McAfee Show” at the time. “Those teams, from my understanding, are Minnesota, that’s New York, Houston, San Antonio and Miami.
