If this is a contest to see which media person can issue the most outrageous T.J. Watt take?
Pittsburgh, we have a winner.
The Steelers are embroiled in a contract dispute with Watt, their best and most decorated player (not counting QB Aaron Rodgers' dusty old quartet of MVP trophies).
He and the team have hit the skids this offseason as Watt, heading into the final year of his existing deal, seeks a new contract.
The two sides have not made any progress on a to this point, and so the six-time All-Pro linebacker will not be in attendance for the team's mandatory minicamp this week.
What's next? Who wins?
Colin Cowherd of FS1 is - with high theatrics - pretending he has the answer.
"He's not gonna show up, and you know why? Because he knows he owns Mike Tomlin," Cowherd said on this week on TV.
Whoa. What?
Cowherd's comment is obviously outrageous, even when he adds context by saying, "He owns the Steelers. He's gonna get whatever he wants. Everybody in Pittsburgh owns a T.J. Watt jersey. They don't want any backlash. The Rooneys, small town, they don't want any backlash, and he's gonna get whatever he wants.''
It is true that Watt's popularity might add leverage.
But it is not true that Pittsburgh must simply cave to "whatever he wants'' - especially when we don't know exactly what that is.
Nor, by the way, does Cowherd, who also managed to get in a dig at Watt.
"This is not a criticism of T.J. Watt,'' he said before launching into a criticism of Watt. "But in four playoff games, he's got one sack, no forced fumbles, six tackles...A lot of T.J. Watt's numbers have been against that bad Bengals' O-line, or bad Cleveland O-line. This is not anti-T.J. Watt. He's a hell of a player. He's their best player. He's tough. He's physical. He plays through pain. (But) 0-4 in the playoffs, one sack."
