New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson is entering his fifth season with the team and first year with new head coach Mike Vrabel.

The running back rushed for over 3,000 yards and 21 rushing touchdowns during his time in Foxborough. Yet, questions linger about his ball security since entering the league.

Pro Football Focus’s Zoltan Buday names Stevenson as a running back with the most to prove entering the 2025-26 season.

“Stevenson started his career well with the Patriots, earning PFF overall grades of 81.1 and 81.3 in his first two years, both of which ranked 10th at the position. He also averaged 4.6 yards per carry as a rookie and 5.0 yards per carry in his second season. However, Stevenson has been unable to get back to that level in the two seasons since then,” Buday wrote for PFF.

The Oklahoma product averaged just 4.0 yards per carry in 2023 and 3.9 yards per carry in 2024. This past season, he earned a 69.6 PFF overall grade, which ranked just 35th among 59 qualifying running backs — largely due to his seven fumbles.”

Stevenson ran for 801 yards and 7 rushing touchdowns last season under Jerod Mayo.

Rhamondre Stevenson’s Fumbling Issues

In his four-year career as a professional, Stevenson has fumbled the ball 14 times. He fumbled 10 times on rushing attempts and four times on receptions with the Patriots. In the 2024-25 season alone, Stevenson had 7 fumbles.

“Stevenson should have a better season just by eliminating fumbles. However, having to run behind arguably the worst offensive line in 2024 certainly did not help. A strengthened offensive line in front of him and a better passing offense led by second-year quarterback Drake Maye could certainly contribute to Stevenson once again playing at his best in 2025,” Buday wrote.

New England drafted tackle Will Campbell with the fourth overall pick in this year’s draft and also brought in tackle Morgan Moses on a three-year deal

Stevenson wasn’t the only Patriots RB who had issues holding the ball. Running back Antonio Gibson fumbled the ball twice last season in his first season as a Patriot.

New Patriots running back coach Tony Dews said he is ready to work with Stevenson to identify the fumbling issue and work on it.

The Patriots drafted running back TreVeyon Henderson in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft from Ohio State.

The former Buckeye played four years of collegiate football and had two fumbles, but managed to recover them both. Henderson rushed for over 3,700 yards and had 48 total touchdowns in his time in Columbus.

The running back has been impressing so far in training, according to Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard.

“Love. I love what I see out of Treveyon Henderson,” Bedard said. “He looks good even without [shoulder] pads. You see the quickness. You see the vision. You see the explosive ability. You see some nice hands… Very excited about him.”

PFF ranked Henderson as the 28th overall running back entering next season without playing a single snap as a professional. PFF ranked Stevenson as the 29th.
